UN's 70th anniversary to be marked in BrusselsOct 19, 2015
On the occasion of UN Day and the 70th anniversary of the Organization, the 26 UN agencies present in Brussels, including UNDP, and their partners will organize a series of activities and information stands on October 25 in Grand Place.
Adults and children will be able to visit a wide range of information stands and enjoy numerous games and activities such as a UN 70 Wall of Wishes, a dreamcatcher workshop, an insect tapas bar and a grasshopper farm.
The focus of the 2015 edition of UN Day is “70 years for We the Peoples”, referring to the first three words of the UN Charter, which came into force on 24 October 1945. UN Day provides an opportunity to highlight the actions that each UN agency, and the international community as a whole, have undertaken in the past 70 years, and will be undertaking in the future.
UNDP will showcase its work in the area of electoral assistance and parliamentary development with visitors of the tent having the opportunity to vote for the best drawing on peace by school children. An exhibition of electoral equipment such as ballot boxes, voting booths, digital cameras, biometric kits and ballot papers will be displayed at the tent as well.
Participants in the event include the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, the United Nations Associations (APNU and VVN) and the European Year for Development. The public will be invited to discover how the actions of United Nations affect their daily lives and how they can get personally involved. It will also be an opportunity for their voices to be heard on topics related to the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals.
On October 24, landmark buildings across the world and Europe will turn UN Blue. Grand Place and other landmark buildings in Flanders will join this initiative and will be lit in blue.
