UNDP Algeria : who we are and what we do ?

UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life for themselves. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on UNDP human resources and our wide range of partners. UNDP provides assistance to Algeria in a broad spectrum of fields in order to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In implementing its mandate, UNDP forges partnerships with governments, civil society as well as bilateral and multilateral organizations. UNDP works at the policy level by supporting the formulation and the implementation of sound development strategies.

UNDP is established in Algeria since 1977 on the basis of an office agreement.

UNDP action in Algeria is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its General Direction of Multilateral Relations.

For the coming years, UNDP action is based on the Country program 2007-2011 prepared by the UNDP and the Algerian authorities and agreed upon by the Administration Council of the organization. The Country Program focuses on three main issues: human development, governance and environmental protection. All our activities integrate a gender approach, which constitutes a fourth pillar for action. The Country program is part of the United Nations Development Assistance Program (UNDAF) 2007-2011 approved by the United Nations system in Algeria and the Algerian Government.

The Country Program allows for UNDP financing on its own resources of 4.2 million USD. The total expected cost of the program is around 34 million USD and the difference will be provided by UNDP partners. UNDP in Algeria receives financial support from the Algerian Government, from the Governments of Belgium, Canada, Switzerland as well as from private donors: Anadarko (USA), Gaz de France (France) and Statoil (Norway).

The UNDP Office in Algiers is led by its Resident Representative M. Mamadou Mbaye. Fifteen staff members make up the UNDP team. Because of the central role of the UNDP within UN development cooperation, the Resident Representative is also UN Resident Coordinator for the UN System in Algeria and writes the yearly Resident Coordinator Report.
