Natural disaster prevention
Way of living in Algeria, specially in an urban environment is characterized by an unsufficient control of the habitat and by pollution problems.Natural disaster risks remain high in a general manner and the strong population concentration and activities on the coasts contribute to increase the risks factors. Risks management and natural disaster prevention in Algeriaare a part of UNDP action to promote and ensure a sustainable human development. UNDP supports the Algerian Government and other national partners through implementation of national natural risks prevention and management mechanisms. United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) stresses particularly the importance of finding concerted ways to reduce natural disasters impacts on populations. Thus, UNDAF fixed as objective for 2011 the strenghtening of the capacities for a best risks nand natural disaster management and prevention in a national land settlement policy. The objective is also to reduce pollution and its negative aspects. Natural risks vulnerability reduction is subject to a new legislation and UNDP gives its support to the Government and territorial collectivities to the development of identification mechanisms and a natural risks vulnerability cartography. Moreover, UNDP supports the strengthening of national action capacities against landmines, in helping implementing the Ottawa Convention, in partnership with the interministerial Committee in charge of the following up of this convention.
